In view of increased possibility of liquor smuggling during the ensuing assembly polls in Karnataka, security and surveillance will be beefed up on the Goa-Karnataka border from April 25.

“We will mount the surveillance along the Karnataka border to check the anti-social element activities and also more important smuggling of liquor through the border,” Inspector General of police Kishan Kumar told PTI.

The Central Election Commission had raised concern about the increase in use of liquor during Karnataka polls with its first phase on May 10.

Goa shares its boundary with Karnataka’s Karwar district in West and Belgaum in South.

Also, the state corridor has thick forest and many subways running through Sahyadri Ghats which makes policing almost impossible in certain parts.

“We are taking extra precautions and are working on joint pickets with the Karnataka police,” Kumar said.

“It’s impossible to check all the roads but we will keep a vigil on the roads going through few villages,” he said.

Goa IGP recently held a meeting with his Karnataka counterpart here to discuss the security and other arrangements.

The coastal state has also sought a list of anti-social elements from Karnataka who are likely to cross the border and create disruptive activities during election.

“We will round them up so that there can be free and fair polls in the neighbouring state,” Kumar said.
