Special Corp to tackle garbage in rural Goa

Minister for Environment Aleixo Sequeira today announced that the government would set up a solid waste management corporation as a special purpose vehicle to tackle garbage menace in rural Goa. He made the announcement while replying to a discussion on demands for grants to Environment, Science & Technology among others, in the Goa assembly today. He said the corporation would help panchayats in terms of know-how, etc in treating solid waste.

Stating that he is personally committed to solving the garbage problem, Sequeira said the government has supported Fr Agnel Technical Complex towards procuring solid waste disposal plant in which a machine would convert garbage into compost. This will be inaugurated on August 26, he said, adding that this could be replicated in other parts of the State. He said the department of Environment, Science & technology has sanctioned three projects of rain water harvesting, in a bid to conserve water.

From the environmental point, Ganesh idols made of plaster of paris will be banned and strict action would be initiated on the sale of such idols, he told the House. On noise pollution, Sequeira said rules have been framed for effective implementation and that funds have been sanctioned to the two district collectors for procuring decibel metres to check noise pollution. Referring to queries on Goa State Coastal Zone Management Authority, the minister said it is an autonomous body formed on instructions of the Supreme Court. Nonetheless, he felt it consists of members who would do their utmost in protecting the environment.

POWER: Sequeira who is also the Power Minister said a Bill Dispute Redressal Committee would be formed under the chairmanship of Finance Secretary so that consumers who have grievances pertaining to their power bills could approach the committee for redressal. On payment of bills, he said, the electricity department has tied up with HDFC Bank. As per a Central proposal mooted by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, he said Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe families would get CLF bulbs to save energy.  Wherever CLF bulbs have failed, it would be replaced, he said, adding that directions have been issued to the contractor.-Herald, Goa Daily
