Firstly, I have been to Goa. Two years ago to be exact. I live in the United States. For most Indians, Goa is the paragon of beach resort life, because it really is one of the finer beach destinations in India. The beaches don't smell like raw sewage like Mumbai's, and since there are many European travelers, the city is kept cleaner than all other cities in India.

Secondly, having said that. Goa is by far one of the worse beaches compared to other much finer destinations like Bora Bora, the Caribbean, Hawaii, etc. Compared to these other beaches, there really is no reason to go to Goa if you can afford to travel to the other nicer beaches in other countries. Goa, to a large degree, is visited by two kinds of tourists: a) trance enthusiasts, and b) it's cheap!

Let me weigh in the second kind of visitors, the Euro-trash and poor Russians. The beaches are lined up with overweight, barely walking beach whales who have the poor Indian beach runners do their bidding. It was a sight to behold in disgust.

My wife and I are very well traveled, so we have the benefit of being able to compare how Goa's beaches stack up against the others in the resort class. Goa is near the bottom. I'm not bashing Goa, I"m just saying it's not all that. If you're Indian you'll probably never have the resources to visit other beaches so this is what you've got. I'm just saying that sometimes I've noticed that Indian pride gets in the way of objective judgement and common sense.

Long story short, I may return to Goa to visit the trance scene, but otherwise, I have no reason to go back there.
