The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has ensured that the textbooks for classes V and VIII — the two classes for which books pertaining to the NCERT syllabus would be introduced from this year — would be made available to the students by June 5 when the schools re-open in Goa.
The Board had introduced NCERT textbooks for some classes last year.
But was unable to make them available to the students, even long after the schools re-opened.
The GBSHSE chairman, Mr L M T Fernandes informed “The Navhind Times on Wednesday that Class VIII textbooks for subjects like mathematics and science and those for Class V, for subjects like Hindi have already arrived from the printer, while textbooks of other subjects for both the classes would arrive by the first week of June.
The Goa Board has sent a report on availability of textbooks for all classes to the education department, in which it is mentioned that 7.29 per cent of textbooks for Class V and 21.39 per cent textbooks for class VIII were ready.
This report was sent on May 10, and almost 12 days have passed since, Mr Fernandes said informing that after the arrival of the textbooks from the printer they are handed over to the experts to find if there are any errors in them, in spite of all efforts made to ensure that the textbooks are error-free.
Then we have to include some chapters in these textbooks which have local touch and disseminate information about Goa, he said, pointing out, For example, in the Environmental Studies textbook for Class V, a chapter on Goan geographical component was added, while in the English (Marigold) textbook for Class V, two local lessons were incorporated.
The students need not worry as all the textbooks would be made available to them by June 5, Mr Fernandes assured.
The state chief of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mr Pandurang Nadkarni told this daily that the SSA basically makes available funds for printing of textbooks.
He also said the Goa Board and the education department takes care of printing and distributing the textbooks, and the funds are provided for printing them based on the number of students enrolled from class I to VIII.
