The high court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday granted the state government time till June 30 to examine the issue of towing away MV River Princess, stranded off Candolim beach for the last nine years. The court also directed advocate general Subodh Kantak to make a statement in that regard on the next date of hearing.

Justice B P Dharmadhikari and Justice U D Salvi were hearing a public interest litigation filed by River Princess Hatao Manch that had complained about the environmental damage caused by the stranded vessel.

During the hearing, the AG informed the court that the state government’s hands were tied in view of the South Goa District Court’s Order restraining it from interfering with the towing process of River Princess by Jaisu Shipping. At this juncture, the bench observed that public interest was of paramount importance and must override private differences, including private interests.  ”The vessel cannot remain there (at its present location) forever,” the bench further observed. The court will now hear the matter on June 30.

  1. all concerned must examine whether the wrecked vessel is now capable of being safely salvage and towed away.
many wrecks develop hull cracks due to stress and may pose danger even when floated.
let all concerned be able to take a wise decision in the long dragging matter.
