The senior professor of zoology at the Pune University, Prof Dileep Deobagkar has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Goa University. Prof Deobagkar will take charge from June 20.
The appointment is for a period of five years. The term of the present Vice-Chancellor, Prof P S Zacharias expires on June 19.
The Chancellor of Goa University, Mr S C Jamir has already communicated the appointment to Prof Deobagkar. A three-member committee under the chairmanship of Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, with Dr V A Pai Panandikar as one of two other members was earlier appointed to recommend names for the post of new Vice-Chancellor, which in turn had suggested the name of Prof Varun Sahani, besides that of Prof Deobagkar.
The registrar of Goa University, Dr Mohan Sangodkar, however, told this daily that though the two names were being discussed for the second topmost post at the University, he has not received any official communication about the same.
Prof Deobagkar has been with the Pune University since 1985 and was presently the head of the department of zoology. He had played a major role in starting the five-year integrated course in M SC, after HSSC. He also played a key role in starting the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research in Pune.
Incidentally, the Goa University has adopted a new syllabus, and also introduced change in its examination pattern from this academic year.
It was widely discussed that the relation between the Goa University and the government had strained after the government had acquired the land belonging to the University on Dona Paula plateau, and Prof Zacharias had resigned two months ago. Prof Zacharias had however refuted the same.
