The Corporation of the City of Panaji today commissioned a brand new garbage collector vehicle into the service to improve its garbage collection system. However, the CCP’s efforts coincided with a show-cause notice issued to it by the Goa State Pollution Control Board for dumping the city garbage at Patto Plaza.

Acknowledging issuance of a show-cause notice to the CCP, GSPCB sources said that a number of complaints were received by the Board from various commercial organisations located at Patto Plaza, including the Life Insurance Corporation and the BSNL as regards dumping of garbage near their office buildings. “These organisations also informed that the stench emitted by the garbage had resulted in making most of their employees sick,” the GSPCB sources added.

The GSPCB has now issued a show-cause notice to the corporation demanding to know the reason for dumping the garbage at a public place and endangering the live of the public, the GSPCB sources informed.

The CCP chairman, Mr Tony Rodrigues said the garbage disposal plant being set up by the corporation at Patto Plaza will be complete within next 20 days. “The plant, being set up through a tendering process, is completely safe and there would be no problem of any kind to the public once it becomes ready,” he added.

Mr Rodrigues also said that the CCP would soon reply to the show-cause notice of the GSPCB.

According to a Supreme Court direction, each municipal and corporation body in the country needs to have a project on local level for disposing of the garbage generated in their areas. However, the municipalities and the corporation in Goa have failed in this regard basically due to the public opposition.

“Meanwhile,” Mr Rodrigues said, “We are introducing a new garbage collector vehicle to collect garbage generated in the city.” This new 10-tyre vehicle has thrice the capacity of the existing 6-tyre garbage collector vehicle, and further has remote-controlled cover which will prevent any stench coming out from the collected garbage, when the vehicle moves around the city, the mayor said.

Mr Rodrigues also informed that the old garbage collector trucks would be auctioned as they have become redundant.

Earlier, the mayor drove the vehicle around the municipal building and tested the same. The deputy mayor, Mr Yatin Parekh was also present on the occasion.
