Goa’s Chief Conservator of Forest Dr Shashi Kumar on Wednesday said that there is no proposal to declare Goa as a tiger conservation zone.

“Mere existence of one tiger does not mean that the state should be declared as a tiger conservation zone,” the CCF told the state legislative assembly’s ad hoc committee on forest which met here on Wednesday.

“There are so many elephants which occasionally enter into Goa from neighbouring states, does that mean we should declared the state as Elephant Protection zone?,” he shot back to a question during the meeting. The meeting was chaired by the Adhoc committee chief - BJP legislator Laxmikant Parsekar.

Dr Kumar also said that there is no such proposal to have tiger conservation zone in the state.

He also said that there is no record to indicate that Goa has resident tigers and pointed out that whatever we see here are mostly from across the borders.
There was a case of tiger killing in Keri which is still in the news. The forest department recently had also stumbled upon the pug marks near Anjunem dam in Mhadei wildlife sanctuary area. Dr Kumar himself in his earlier statement had conceded that the pug marks could be that of tigress and a cub.
