Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has accused its former Goa unit President Wilfred D’Souza of forming a coterie and impeding the party’s growth in the state, where it is part of the ruling alliance.

During the last few years, the party in Goa was controlled by a coterie of individuals who did not go beyond Panaji and adjoining areas, NCP General Secretary Gurunath Kulkarni said at a press conference here today. Kulkarni’s statement comes a month after D’Souza resigned from the post, which he held for nearly 10 years, along with members of the party’s state executive.

The Sharad Pawar-led outfit is now reorganising the party in the state, where it has three MLAs, two of whom are Ministers in the Congress-led Digamber Kamat Government. Kulkarni is in Goa along with Maharashtra NCP President R R Patil to discuss reorganisation and elect a new state unit chief. “We have leaders but we could not build the party in the state,” Kulkarni said.

There were no attempts to enroll new members. At present we have hardly 86 members, he said. Kulkarni said the party now aims to spread across all the 40 constituencies as it is emerging as a viable political alternative in Goa after BJP’s debacle here. The party aims to have two lakh members across the state, the NCP leader said.
