In response to recent intelligence warning on a possible attack during the New Years’ Eve in Goa, heightened security is palpable.

As a result, policemen are placing additional check posts on beaches in Goa. But some prominent voices in Goa say the state is ill-equipped to counter terror. “We must put pressure on authorities that now we are not going to just stand and watch innocent lives being lost,” said Anju Timblo, Managing Director, Fomento Resorts a Hotels Ltd.
A quick checklist reveals the lacunae. The bomb detection squad lacks even basic X-ray machines.
Ironically, the Quick Response Team formed after the Mumbai attack does not have any bullet proof jackets. Bunkers on the beach do not have night vision devices and policemen have not even trained at a firing range in over 18 months.

The Goa Police accept the charges but say they have done enough to offer the first line of defence in case of any eventuality.
“We don’t have night vision on every sentry post. But we have deployed police. There is beach patrolling. So by using all the means possible we are trying to multiply our capabilities under the present circumstances. But yes, it’s not sufficient,” said Atmaram Deshpande, Superintendent of Police.
The countdown to Goa’s most awaited night has begun and preparations have started. But the real preparedness would be to ensure safety of one and all.
