Health services were partially affected in Goa’s government-run hospitals as class IV staff went on a one-day strike today, pressing for their demands of wages and allowances.

The thousands of workers of Goa Medical College and Hospital and two district hospitals — Asilo (north) and Hospicio (south) — went on strike.

The striking workers are affiliated to Gomantak Mazdoor Sangh.

“There was not much impact of the strike as it was only for a day. We kept alternate arrangements in place to cater to the emergency,” Dr Rajan Cuncolienkar, medical superintendent, Goa Medical College and Hospital said this evening.

The class four employees usually help nurses in different wards besides sweeping, carry patients to referral points, transport blood samples and are involved in other works.

The strike was withdrawn later in the evening and workers will resume their duties from tonight, hospital authorities stated.
