Mr B K Hariprasad, the all-India Congress committee general-secretary in-charge of Goa desk, flew in the state late on Friday evening to facilitate the induction of the Taleigao MLA, Mr Atanasio Monserrate in the state cabinet, which the Congress sources said could happen within a couple of days.
Soon after his arrival in the state, Mr Hariprasad met Mr Francisco Sardinha, the Goa pradesh Congress committee president, and held discussions with him as regards to the political situation in the state as well as party matters.
Later he met the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat and discussed issues related to carrying out changes in the cabinet, said sources in the party.
Mr Hariprasad is likely to call on the Finance Minister, Mr Dayanand Narvekar at his residence on Saturday morning and prevail upon him to resign from the cabinet in view of him being charge-sheeted in the Ticketgate scam, thereby paving way for induction of Mr Monserrate. Mr Narvekar is recuperating from an operation on his knee recently.
The AICC general-secretary is also likely to facilitate re-induction of Mr Pandurang Madkaikar, the Cumbharjua MLA – who was dropped recently from the cabinet, by facilitating “dropping” of Mr Joaquim Alemao, the Urban Development Minister, from the cabinet.
Meanwhile, some Congressmen though a leaflet circulated at the Congress House, where the executive committee meeting of the party was held, accused the Chief Minister of adopting double standard in dropping Mr Narvekar on being charge-sheeted and accommodating Mr Monserrate, against whom charges have already been framed way back on March 21, 2003.
The Congressmen urged the party leadership not to adopt two standards of morality and become a laughing stock even as they questioned as to why the Congress government has not filed charge-sheets in cases where Mr Monserrate was involved in attacks at IT park at Dona Paula and against Youth Congress activists.
