In what may be termed as an anti-climax, the Goa University (GU) on Saturday decided to hold in abeyance the order issued by its registrar on September 26, which had declared the elections to the executive union of the students council of GU, conducted on September 26 as null and void.

The decision to hold the order in abeyance was taken by Prof A V Afonso, in-charge vice chancellor of the university, with a view to find a solution to the vexed issue. The entire process of election to the executive union of the students council will now be referred to the executive council of the university, for review, informed a press note from the university released by the GUs assistant registrar, Mr R R Bhatikar. The executive committee of the university comprises of 13 members minus the vice-chancellor.

Earlier, speaking to the victorious group belonging to the students cell affiliated to the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prof Afonso said, We have failed in the procedure and will now take views of both the concerned parties into consideration while taking any further decision. He also stated that the Goa University had problems with the director of the Students Welfare Board and the director was not knowledgeable enough to hold the post. Prof Afonso also said that the university system had become irregular and was causing him a problem for reacting to the situation.

Earlier in the day, the students supporting the BJP students cell held a dharna inside the office of the registrar for nearly three hours, demanding that the order declaring the election null and void be withdrawn.
