Goa Tourism has decided to revamp its image by adding many more products and aspects to its tourism portfolio. For a start, culture and heritage are the new focus areas in the offing. The state has also drawn up a Regional Plan up to 2021. According to a reliable source from the industry, Goa Tourism is working on a Regional Plan 2021, and the blue print for the same is ready and awaiting approval. The plan has been drawn to meet target demands set by the state and to facilitate tourists with necessary infrastructure. Adding perspective from the Government point of view, Elvis Gomes, Director, Goa Tourism said, “The Regional Plan 2021, which is under formulation, aims to retain Goa’s lure for tourists and locals, while at the same time retaining and protecting nature.”

Encashing on the heritage and culture offerings, the tourism department plans to tap into the lucrative rich Indo-Portuguese culture of the state by promoting heritage home stays in the state. In this regard, Goa Tourism will shortly launch its ‘Heritage House Scheme’, which will grant financial assistance to heritage houses, with an aim to preserve them and put them into use as ‘Heritage Home Stays’. “The scheme is in its final stages of approval, and the Government is considering granting a sum of Rs five lakh onwards for this project. This project will kick start in the next four to five months, but we cannot disclose any more information,” stated Gomes.

According to reliable industry sources, about 51 village mansions will be converted into heritage villas and the Government has invited homeowners to form a committee, which will overlook project details. The state is also looking to promote the destination in Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
