The party is slowly ending for Goa’s tourism industry. A global economic crisis, followed by the horror of the attacks in Mumbai, could make this tourist season one of Goa’s worst ever.

Traditionally, December is the industry’s best month. But arrivals are already down by 20 per cent since October, and could drop further. “There has been a dent in the business, the economy has suffered,” says Vice-Chairman, Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mangirish Raikar. Fewer tourists from Russia, UK and European countries are heading for Goa this year.

The chartered flight business is down by nearly 35 per cent, and several hotels have been forced to slash room rates.

GOA TOURISM HIT: Arrivals are already down by 20 per cent since October, and could drop further.

Visitors from Israel, in particular, have almost dried up, following an advisory from the Israel government warning its citizens to stay away from Goa.

Countries like Russia too have warned that terrorists could target the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. The state government, though, says it’s doing everything it can to keep visitors safe.

“Last one year we have been hearing that Goa could be a soft target. So am calling on the Home Minister to give us some additional security companies during the New Year peak time of December 20th to January 5th. So am requesting that either these forces should be retained there or they should be deployed again from December 20th to January 5th,” says Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat.

Bunkers have been constructed on some beaches, and night markets frequented by foreign visitors have been told to install closed-circuit cameras.

But for now, the state will have to take heart from those who have made the trip, and hope others are listening.

  3. Yes, its very bad that the tourism got reduced in GOA. I think the Tourism department should think about it and take some positive steps to increase the number of people visiting GOA.
