Paying tribute to the memory and sacrifice of the valiant martyrs and freedom fighters that fought for Goa’s liberation, governor S S Sidhu said that Goa has achieved phenomenal progress in political, social and cultural spheres in four and half decades.
“The state has a high per capita income and its human development and social indices rank among the best in the country,” he said in his message to All India Radio (AIR) and Goa Doordarshan. Adding that Goa has carved a niche for itself by maintaing a rich tradition of peace, social cohesion and communal harmony, he said that he hoped that people would protect this rich legacy.

Stating that the government is striving to take the state to new heights of all-round growth, he said Goa needs to further raise its quality of education to keep pace with emerging global trends. “We should inculcate a greater sense of patriotism, moral values and national responsibility among the youth and also eradicate unemployment. We should try to eliminate gender disparities and provide matching opportunities to women,” he said.
Calling for a comprehensive and well-researched development strategy in view of globalisation and advancements in various fields, he said that it should be operationalised in an all-inclusive and participatory framework, keeping future requirements in mind. Expressing concern over the criticism of developmental projects, he said that people should adopt a balanced approach to ensure that development is not affected but at the same time, preserve the environment’s valuable features.
Urging law enforcing authorities and security forces to be alert in thwarting the designs of anti-social elements, he appealed to the people to be vigilant and co-operate with these agencies.
