The Education Minister, Mr Atanasio Monserrate has stated that aided schools can begin to switch over to their language of choice by next week. A decision to that effect was taken on Friday at a meeting, which was held to deliberate on the implementation of the cabinet decision to give grants to English-medium primary English.

A summary of the parents’ choice along with a report on implementation of MOI decision submitted by the monitoring committee were placed and discussed threadbare at the meeting attended by the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, officials and members of the committee.“At the meeting today we deliberated on all points that were brought up by the committee and all the hurdles have been cleared. There is no need for it to go before the cabinet,” the Education Minister told the media after the meeting.“We told the officials that they should prepare a report on how the operational part should be, and by next week the implementation will begin,” he maintained.Textbooks will be printed and ready by mid-August and we will hand over the same to 350 English teachers. He, however, said the implementation of the decision in government primary schools could take some time as amalgamation of some schools due to low student enrolment could take place.

On Thursday, the Education Minister had told the media that the roadmap for the MOI implementation would be decided in a couple of days after going through the report from the monitoring committee and summary of parents’ choice. The education department had submitted the report on Wednesday to the monitoring committee after scrutinising the proformas filled in by parents on their choice of medium of instruction. According to the report, more than 90 per cent of the parents had chosen English as a medium of instruction for their children, while 6 per cent have chosen Marathi and 4 per cent have chosen Konkani.
