Town and Urban Planning Minister of Goa Babush Monserrate resigned from the state Cabinet on Wednesday night.

Monserrate, who has been in the thick of controversy for his alleged links with the land mafia in Goa, sent his resignation to Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane.

The proposed Goa land development plan is Monserrate’s brainchild and he had been pushing for the implementation of it in its original form.

However, majority of Goans have vehemently opposed the implementation of the plan and the state has been a witness to several dharnas and processions.

According to sources in the Goa Congress, at least two Congress MLAs are likely to resign from the Assembly on Thursday to force Rane to go for an early election. The Assembly elections are due in May 2007.

Congress has the support of just 21 MLAs in the 40-member Assembly and even a minor rebellion can bring the state government down.
