Urban development minister and president of Goa Football Association (GFA) Joaquim Alemao has accused Housing Minister Micky Pasheco of ruining the dreams of the football lovers from Goa, as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Bharti Enterprises on Wednesday March 18,  decided to scrap plans to build an academy at Cuncolim in Goa due to the delay involved with the acquisition of land for the project.

The academy project involved an outlay of around one hundred crore rupees. Had it been realized, the Goan youths would have got a golden opportunity to pursue their carriers in Football. But the stubborn attitude of minister Pasheco has ruined the plans and shattered the dreams of the Goan people, reiterated Alemao, talking to Daijiworld correspondent.

According to the AIFF, the academy will now be moved to Haryana, as Goa has let go of the opportunity offered to it to build the Football Academy. Alemao explained, AIFF and Bharati Enterprises were supposed to spend around a billion rupees on this project, and that the state government did not have to spend anything out of its pocket. This was an ideal project for everyone, but Pasheco created hurdles, as a result of which it got shifted to some other state, he rued.

National Congress Party leader, central minister and AIFF’s acting president Prafful Patel had intervened in the matter and asked its minister  Pasheco to clear the file pertaining to the acquisition of land for the academy. But he (Micky) did not oblige the union minister. What can you expect from a person who does not obey his own party leader?, Alemao questioned.

Alemao put the blame for the shifting of the academy squarely on Pasheco, accusing the minister of keeping the relative file pending in his drawer for about six months. Alemao stressed, no minister can be expected to keep such important files for so long.

Prafful Patel had asked Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat last month, to sort out  the problems with his ministerial colleagues within seven days, warning that the academy will be shifted out of the state if this is not done.

  1. To let you know the latest news. Goa was given the honours by the federation of motor sports clubs of india led by our dynamic chairman mr vijay mallya, to host the first ever motocross championship in the country in goa in 2010. what an honour it was for our state. we approched the sports minister to convey to him the good news but before we could even start he said there is no funds!!! Hey we were looking at only 1 crore support from the govt to host the biggest sporting event that has ever come to Goa. but no, the govt has 500 crores to spend on national games but not 1 crore to spend on what we already have. Any way we went ahead with the event inspite of all odds on jan 24th 2010, with the support of TVS Motor Company as the main sponsor, which even reached to the extent that we were refused sound permission to play music in between races and that too between 3pm to 7pm on a sunday. how rediculous can that be? It is a known fact that music is played beyond midnight across the beach belt disturbing the entire locality but nobody can do a damn about it, but imagine our govt has the odesity to even reject sports activities on our beach belt which is much required due to the indirect vises of tourism forced upon on our youth. i must respect the efforts put by the SP North Mr Bosco George who went out of his way to assist us get the sound permissions, and also honour us by coming as the chief guest for the race. anyway, after the event the greatest news was declared to our state that, for the first time in the history of goan motorsports one of our goan lads namely alan sequeira from navelim won the first place in the all india motocross championship, which was the greatest news for the thousands of motorsports fans in goa. As alan resides in the margao constituency which coincidently is the constituency of our present chief minister mr digamber kamat, we arranged a meeting with him. the shocking news was that the CM repeated the same words ” goa govt has no funds!!!” can any one fathom that!!!! all he had to do was say that he was proud that one of the youths from his constituency has taken the lead at all india level and goa govt will support him by buying him a new bike which would cost only 6 lakhs rupees. But nothing happened. as of today my company owns many racing bikes namely the ” gomes sports academy” and we have made necessary arrangements to buy alan a new bike to compete with the rest of the country to keep his lead in the remaining 2 rounds and most importantly to keep the goan flag flying high, which is to be held in nov 2010 and final in dec 2010. can this get any worse? thats goa my friends. sorry state of affairs is not the word. you guess what!!!

  2. It has been over a year now since i last sent my blog as regards the Goa Govt doing nothing as regards promotion of motorsports in our state. Our sports minister is only interested in getting his pet project ie. hosting the national games in goa at a whooping cost of 500 crores. there is no doubt after this huge expenditure goa will not even gain 10% of the income on ticket money and to make matters worse goa will have to spend crores of rupees every year only to maintain these white elephant sports structures. what are we heading for? no doubt a total disaster. i as the president of the goa motor sports association had offered the goa govt to host the world motocross championship for the cost of only 20 crorees and a guarented income of 25% plus the income via ticket money and the income that would come to the whole state of goa by way of hotel room bookings, taxi services, restaurants and bars, and local people earning on many other means of tourism activities. But alas there is no one to listen to our pleas which are the need of the hour to save our tourism industry which is slowly dying due to the news that is doing the rounds across the globe that goa is a heaven for sex drugs and rock and roll, and that anything goes in goa and the worst part is you can get away with it. I thank all who wrote to me and personally called me, and reconfirm that my efforts to get goa on the world map of racing will continue. best regards Ashley, Goa, India. 919822179721

  3. Its high time Goa gets its act together. This blame game has been going on for too long. Goa’s name has grown only because of the wonderful beaches which were discovered by the hippy era in the 60s, and not because of Govt efforts. The inside truth is, it is still a prefered tourist destination only because its cheap. Getting to the point, why speak of only football, as these kinds of delays are also happening to other sports too. let me tell you, i as the president of the Goa Motor Sports Association was the first to introduce Goa to National level Supercross and Motocross racing in 2001. The association is the only duly recognised body for motorsports promotions in Goa under the Sports Authority of Goa. The sad truth is till date the SAG has not given us bikes , nor race track, nor coaches, mechanics, nothing at all. The fact is today Goa is declared as the hub of Off Road racing in India, solely due to our private efforts and with the sponsors being given to us not by our Goverment but by motor sports enthusiast of Goa and mainly the TVS Motor Company. I have personally invested 25000 sq mts of my own land in Candolim to start the first ever race track in India in the year 2003. In 2005 my company namely the Gomes Sports Academy Pvt Ltd got the rights to host the first ever India Grand Prix Motocross world championship in Goa. This being the biggest ever sporting event to come to India is still in the drawers of our Goa Govt. There are other states in India who are inviting me to host the same in their states, but i as a packa goankar i want to bring this mega event to Goa, but just cannot get the required support from our Goa Govt. Nothing is going well for Goa, except that the coffers of the ministers are getting filled, and Goa is going to the dogs. Only a miracle can save Goa.
Ashley Gomes. President, Goa Motor Sports Association.

  4. There is no that talent could be found anywhere when the rural people of Goa are willing to be a part of Goa football association then no doubt they are talented. The All India Football federation must give chance to them.who doesn’t obey his party leaders,he should be fired from the party at once because he is not promoting the game football may be due to his vote bank.
