With 26 days left for the Lok Sabha elections and filing of nominations to end in a week’s time, the Congress and its ally the Nationalist Congress Party appear deadlocked over seat sharing in Goa. Senior NCP leader Praful Patel on Friday confirmed that the parties were “still talking” over the North Goa seat. Patel refused to confirm that Nirmala Sawant would be the party candidate for North Goa and said,

“We have not decided on the candidate. Our talks with the Congress are on. We have asked for the North Goa seat and hopefully we will get it.” Asked about the reason behind the delay, Patel said the Congress was also demanding the seat but added that “these things always happen in coalition politics and we should be able to resolve the issue soon”. He, however, refused to specify a date.

Other NCP leaders weren’t so optimistic. A senior NCP office-bearer in Delhi said, “I don’t know what the Congress is doing. It seems the alliance is not working.” Asked if the Congress and the NCP were going their separate ways in Goa, he said, “Maybe. Praful Patel is having talks with the Congress. So let’s see. But I am not optimistic.”

Even more pessimistic was state NCP president Dr Wilfred de Souza. When asked for his analysis of the scenario, de Souza shot back saying, “Chaos! Chaos all over the country. Nobody seems to be agreeing to anything and new alliances are being formed.”
