Intending to spread awareness among people about litter-free beaches, Indian Coast Guard’s Goa region organised a massive beach cleanliness drive on Saturday.
North Goa’s Baga, Calangute, Sinquerim, Candolim, Miramar and South district’s Utorda, Majorda, Colva and Arossim beaches got a facelift during the drive.
“On this day, the beaches around the world are cleaned by the coast guard and other volunteers to bring awareness amongst the general public,” Indian Coast Guard’s Deputy Inspector General (Goa region) Commander M S Dangi told PTI.

He said that more than 70 per cent of the pollutants and garbage present on the beaches originate from land based sources. “It is the duty of all of us to ensure that beautiful beaches of Goa are always litter-free and this is the only way to ensure that we and our future generation enjoy the gift of nature for time to come,” he added.
Five star resorts and other establishments operating along the coast also took part in the drive following an appeal made by coast guards.
“We received overwhelming response from them,” Dangi said.
