The beaches in Goa are fighting a battle for survival. The famous Coco beach in North Goa has already been lost to sea erosion, and more beaches are under threat too

The seawater washed away the popular tourist getaway after heavy rains lashed the coast over the past few days. And many believe it’s the handiwork of commercial builders. Locals allege the builder’s cut down trees near the beach, making it vulnerable to sea erosion.

“This year the water level is increased. The sea never came so close to the constructions. It has uprooted trees and destroyed everything on shore,” says a resident of Goa, Anand.

has already been lost to sea erosion.

Nandkumar Kamat who is a scientist adds, “There is unplanned development activity on Coco beach and tremendous pressure on the beach because of tourism. We have to keep in mind that we can’t go on constructing on beach because it’s a very soft landmass.”

The state government seems to have heeded the warning sign and has ordered action.

“I have set up a committee to look into this matter under NIO Director,” says CM, Goa, Digamber Kamat.

The government’s concern is understandable because lakhs of tourists are drawn to Goa’s beaches every year and if more areas meet the same fate, it could affect the state’s economy itself.

  1. raves, themselves, are not illegal.. though the law forbids loud music being played after 10 pm.. and of course drugs are illegal - n they seem to form a large part of the raves… as a lot of people know :)
