Students at the Goa Institute of Management (GIM) were in for a surprise when they saw the pay packages on offer. Despite the recession hit economy, the highest salary on offer was Rs 12.43 lakh, higher than the maximum offered last year. “Out of 118 students, 97 have been placed so far. The average salary was Rs 6.23 lakh per annum this year, while the highest salary offered is Rs 12.43 lakh. Despite the average drop in salaries by over 30% in other B-schools nationally, GIM saw a drop of only 16% compared to last year,” GIM director Peter D’Lima, said. The highest pay package was offered by Johnson & Johnson Pvt Ltd.

GIM has not only fared well in placements in comparison to its prior record, but also as compared to other business schools around the country, said staff memebrs at the institute . As many as 40 national and multinational companies interviewed students for the best of management brains. Last year too 40 companies had made 194 offers to GIM’s post graduate diploma in management students. The salary offered last year was the highest ever at Rs 9.5 lakh per annum.

Roweena Maria Barreto, who topped both the years of the course and was selected “Best Management Student 2008” by Goa Management Association, said, “HSBC has offered me a very good package and the position of an associate analyst at their Bangalore branch. This is a reflection of the increasing quality of GIM, where a student is judged on the basis of the institute’s quality.”

Job positions on offer included arbitrage strategist, transition manager, corporate marketing, corporate banking, product management and derivative modeling. GIM is one of the 20 B-schools of 1,200, accredited by India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
