Full Length Statue of Pt. Nehru be erected in Panaji: Shantaram Naik

Mr. Shantaram Naik M.P. and Secretary, All India Congress Committee that Goa government should install a full length statue of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Former Prime Minister of India at a prominent place at Panaji during the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of Goas independence.

Mr. Naik who was speaking as a Chief Guest at a function organized by Goa Pradesh Congress Committee in Congress House, Panaji, on Saturday, to celebrate the birth anniversary of Pt. Nehru, further said that it is because of Pt. Nehru that Goans are breathing fresh air in a democratic Goa.

In the first general elections which were held, Goans ought of have recognized the role of Pt. Nehru in liberating Goa despite strong international pressures, and that, as a recognition of that role should have voted congress to power in Goa , which unfortunately, did not take place, Mr. Naik said.

It is high time, Mr. Naik said that we honour this great man by erecting his statue so that he is remembered not only by the present generation but also by the future generation. Mr. Naik also pleaded that the Goa Government should prepare a Childrens Policy for the welfare of children up to the age of 14.

Mr. M.K.Shaikh, Vice President of the GPCC said that Nehur was a great visionary who took courageous steps to shape the destiny of the country.

Dr. Ulhas Parab, Vice Chairman of Goa Khadi Board, said that the Goa Government should take necessary measures for the proper development and growth of the children in the state.

Shri Gurudas Natekar, Secretary, GPCC, said that it is the principle of mixed economy which Pt. Nehru proposed that strengthened Indias economy in all the sectors.

Shri Shambhu Bhau Bandekar said that father of Pt. Nehru late Shri Motilal Nehru wanted his son to be a lawyer, however, destiny brought Nehru into Indian politics and the rest is all history.

At the outset, Shri Altinho Gomes, General Secretary of GPCC gave a welcome speech and Shri Shankar Kirlaparkar, treasurer of the GPCC proposed a vote of thanks.
