Foundation stone laid for Dabolim terminal

After a delay of several years, Goa’s only international airport at Dabolim is set for an expansion to cope with the increasing air traffic in the state. Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel Saturday laid the foundation stone for the Rs 325-crore integrated terminal building at the Dabolim airport. Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat along with other state ministers was also present on the occasion.

“It was never a desire or intention to close Dabolim airport. If any politics is being played, please put the speculation to rest,” Patel said rubbishing political speculations that the airport was destined to close once another greenfield airport would become operational in north Goa. The glass and steel structure of the terminal building will be built over 61957 sq mtrs of area, equipped with a modern passenger friendly and integrated baggage conveyor system. The Dabolim airport is a naval base and is open for civil flights round the clock.

The airport handles 22 lakh domestic and five lakh international passengers annually. “With the current expansion, Goa will be better connected with the rest of the world,” Patel said.
