FC Goa have struck gold. On Tuesday, they announced the signing of Brazilian legend Arthur Antunes Coimbra, more famously known as Zico, as their manager (head coach) for the upcoming ISL season.

Often called the ‘White Pele’ for his exquisite passing and even better finishing, Zico appeared in three World Cups and started his coaching career with Japan guiding them at the World Cup in 2006 before guiding Turkish club Fenerbahce to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League in 2008.

Zico signed the contract on Tuesday in Ro de Janeiro, Brazil. Representatives of FC Goa will travel to Brazil shortly to help Zico complete the visa formalities and bring Zico to Goa in the next couple of days.

The man responsible for getting Zico to India is Dempo SC legend, Brazilian Roberto Mendes da Silva, or better known as Beto. He got in touch with Zico’s agents a month ago and says it took a lot of convincing for Zico to agree.

“For the first couple of meetings, we had to explain the project (ISL) to him. We had to convince him that India had a lot to offer,” said Beto.

Asked what does it mean for India, Beto said, “He’s probably the best coach that will come the ISL. Look what he’s done with Japan. Even his time at Fenerbahce was fruitful. He brings with him tremendous experience as a world class player and coach.”

The eight-franchise based tournament will be played from October 12- December 20.
