Explicit eroticism and nudity in some of the films being screened at the 40th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa have led
to a queer dilemma—house full auditoriums. Except that the audience aren’t quite the discerning cinema buffs admiring the finer nuances of the adult content on display, but those yearning for some X-rated fare.
“I was eagerly looking forward to watching `Angels With Dirty Wings’; not for the sexually explicit material it contains, but for the underlying message that the synopsis promises to convey,” said an enraged delegate who is pursuing a filmmaking course from a renowned film institute in Mumbai.
“However, perverts are absolutely one-track minded and hence incapable of appreciating the creations of directors like Ronald Reber. This dilemma absolutely defeats the purpose of holding a film festival,” she fumed.
A foreign participant agreed, “For a movie that was borderline porn, I wasn’t surprised that the screening was house full! Although it was dark inside, I gathered that most were chaps brimming with lust. After all, the line between visual gratification and the intended message is very fine.”
At the Q&A session right after the screening, the participant was impressed with part of the audience deciphering the message. But the positive impression was soon tarnished with a female viewer divulging her “unpleasant incident” wherein a man seated at her left “succumbed to the unintended provocation of this graphic film”.
