Weddings planned in the state over the next two days may have to go dry, with the state administration banning the sale of alcohol from Tuesday 5pm to Thursday 5pm in view of the Lok Sabha polls on Thursday.
Twelve couples getting married over the next two days have applied for permission to serve alcohol at their wedding celebrations.
“We received 12 applications from couples asking that their private ceremonies be exempted from the restrictions. Weddings being socio-religious functions, we decided to forward the requests to the Election Commission through the office of the chief electoral officer for consideration,” excise commissioner Sandeep Jacques told TOI on Monday.
TOI’s queries with the office of the chief electoral officer met with a blunt response. “Let them cancel their weddings and have it some other time,” a top official, not wanting to be named, said.
