In an answer to Goa Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, Union Minister of State for Environment & Forests Namo Narain Meena said that an amount of Rs 13.23 lakh was released during 2007-08 “to support 500 eco-clubs in the State of Goa under the National Green Corps Programme”.
Despite Goa having as many as 500 eco clubs, it would be interesting to know the steps taken by these clubs towards creating a greener Goa, even as locals have been a waging a desperate war against converting the State into a concrete jungle. Secondly, it’s time the Centre followed up the proposals and kept a check on how the funds have been utilised.
Further, the minister informed, grants of Rs 26,000 and Rs 10,000 have been released during 2007-08 to various organisations in Goa under the National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) and the Seminar/Symposia/ workshop programme respectively.
