The new Chief Minister of Goa, Digambar Kamat, the man who edged out Pratapsinh Rane and Ravi Naik is no stranger to the art of party hopping for power.

A NEW ERA: Goa’s new Chief Minister Digambar Kamat sworn in on June 8.

“I have always carried people with me I will also carry coalition partners with me” said Digambar Kamat after the announcement on June 8, that he would be leading the state for the next five years.

It was a long journey for the former Power Minister in the Pratapsingh Rane government. Kamat had quit BJP two years ago to join hands with the Congress.

From being instrumental in engineering the downfall of the Manohar Parrikar led BJP government in 2005, Kamat has come a long way. He was declared the CM after a marathon of meetings throughout June 7.

Central Observer of the Congress, Margaret Alva, said, “The newly elected MLAs of the Congress met and unanimously elected Digambar Kamat as the leader of the new Congress Legislature Party.”

Kamat’s election is a bit controvertial though. The supporters of Goa Pradesh Congress and the committee President Ravi Naik, are unhappy with Kamat’s elevation.

Kamat, along with Ravi Naik and one member each from the both coalition partners NCP and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak party have been sworn in.

Dealing with the aggressive opposition on the one hand and disgruntled Congressmen on the other, Kamat may have emerged, as the top contender for the post, a lot still has to be done.
