The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat called upon the people to introspect and be committed not to do anything which will harm the environment. Stating that development cannot be at the cost of environment, Mr Kamat said that the role of his government will be to strike a balance between the environment and development. The Chief Minister was speaking at the ecology seminar on the theme ‘Care for the Earth and Eco Sensitive Living,’ organised jointly by Loyola High School and Loyola Ex-Students Association at Margao on Friday.
Over hundred participants including headmasters, nature club teachers, eco club teachers and science teachers drawn from 30 high schools, most of them from Salcete taluka attended the seminar. The Chief Minister said issues concerning ecology and environment are debated across the world, and that, people are also worried about global ecological and environmental problems. Environment and ecology is dear to each one of us and therefore precaution to tackle problems like garbage menace should start from all of us, he said.
Mr Kamat complimented the organisers for having chosen the theme ‘Care for the Earth and Eco Sensitive Living’ and more so for involving teaching fraternity in the seminar. He stressed on the need to inculcate moral values among the younger generation at school level which are required to achieve all round development and address issues that come in the way of progress and development. Parents at home and teachers of primary school can best inculcate these values among the children, he added. The Chief Minister also emphasised the need to maintain cleanliness at home and at public places to conserve environment. Listing the measures taken by the government to conserve environment, he said that the government has been supporting non-governmental organisations in welfare projects.
The vision document being prepared for the state of Goa will also be ready in the Golden Jubilee Year of the Liberation of Goa, he informed. Mr Francisco Lume Pereira, director of Fomento Resources, Fr Robert Athikcal and Dr Orland Hazra guided the participants of the day-long seminar. Earlier, Fr Anthony D’Silva welcomed the guests.
