Chief minister Digambar Kamat has convened a meeting of all coastal MLAs from Pernem, Bardez, Tiswadi, Mormugao, Salcete, Quepem and Canacona on Tuesday to discuss the issue of over 8,500 structures facing the axe for an alleged violation of CRZ rules.

While the recent cabinet decision to promulgate an ordinance to save the illegal’ structures of Cidade de Goa has fuelled a debate, tourism minister Francisco Pacheco has urged the government to consider a Bill during the budget session of the Assembly to protect structures of fishermen and others.

A delegation of sarpanchas from Benaulim, Cavelossim and Majorda called on the chief minister on Friday and brought up the matter of the notices issued for demolition of their structures. “The chief minister heard the sarpanchas sympathetically and will convene a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue. All coastal MLAs will be invited,” sources who did not want to be named, said.

Pacheco had raised the issue of demolition notices earlier too, stating that many structures had existed before the CRZ was imposed in February 1991.
