A District and Sessions Court here this week discharged Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan in a case of alleged violation of the provisions of the Goa Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Act, 1997.

The case was filed by National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE-India), a body associated with anti-tobacco campaign, accusing Mr. Bachchan among others of promoting smoking following display of an advertisement hoarding on a Goa highway, which depicted him puffing a cigar while endorsing a product.

The actor had informed the NOTE that the hoarding was based on a still taken from the film “Family” and that he had not permitted anyone to use it. Session judge U.V. Bakre nullified the process against Mr. Bachchan by Judicial Magistrate First Class following a revision application filed on behalf of Mr. Bachchan. The JMFC had earlier issued a notice of legal proceedings against the actor after a criminal case was filed against him and others under the stringent Goa Anti-tobacco Act last year by the NOTE.
