Goa Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo has said that the desire of the media to be sensational, at times due to market forces, should be avoided even though it may indeed be very tempting sometimes.
Governor was speaking after inaugurating IX Annual South Asia Media Summit-2012 on the theme “Government Curbing Media? Regulation vs Self-Regulation of Media in South Asia” organised by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES)-India in association with the International Centre Goa (ICG) and Media Information and Communication Centre of India(MICCI) at ICG on Sunday.
Media professionals, subject specialists from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are participating in the two-day summit. Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Rane also graced the occasion.
Speaking further, the Governor said, the media’s reach is vast and its role multi-dimensional. The pen is mightier than the sword, but with a proviso, that it has the right ink. In India, it is indeed a matter of pride that freedom of expression is a constitutional guarantee.
Appreciating the theme of the Summit, Governor said, over the last two decades, the South Asia region has witnessed a media revolution or a media explosion. Speaking on the occasion, Rane said, media has a vital role to play in today’s world, as media whether it is print or electronic makes for reaching impact on the society. He favoured regulation of social media by itself. However, if required the Government should step in at appropriate time he added.
Henrik Maihack, FES, India, Rajeshwar Dayal, Senior Media Advisor, FES, India also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, Nandini Sahai, Director the International Centre, Goa welcomed the guests, while Collin Curry, Trustee, MICCI proposed a vote of thanks.
