From 28th of February to the 3rd of March, over 2000 students from 800 colleges from all over India take a break from the rigors of academics to plan their itinerary in Goa. The occasion? Spree 2013.

The annual sports festival SPREE 2013 of BITS Pilani Goa Campus. With events spanning the entire spectrum of sport, ranging from no-contact intellectual battles (chess) to full contact physical battles(football), Spree brings high octane entertainment for all involved. With the enormous footfall, it is arguably the biggest and best sports festival in India. The main events of Spree include Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Carom, Chess, Badminton, Basketball, Table-Tennis and Lawn tennis. The sheer number of events is a testament to the facilities available, with Cricket even being played on a BCCI approved ground, which, incidentally, has its own mention on ‘Cricinfo’, owing to the ‘Vijay Hazare Trophy’, to which the campus was host.

Football is probably the other highlight of Spree, with BITS Goa’s own football team, BITSFC, competing in the Goan second division. ‘Kickoff’ as the competition is known, is expected to be a major crowd puller. The defending champions in each sport will return, looking to renew their stay at the top. Spree also has a variety of innovative and unusual Special Events, namely, Shuffle (a mixed doubles table tennis event where your partner is shuffled every round), Antichess (A quirky variation of Chess where the competitors play to lose), 3BA( Basketball with 3 players in each team), Futsal, Mixed doubles Badminton, Pool, Carom Pool, Gully Cricket, Table Tennis Doubles, Mini Tennis and Keepy Uppey. Futsal is arguably the highlight of the Special Events, and a highly adrenaline pumping one as well.A number of ‘offbeat’ events have also been organized with the emphasis being on good clean fun rather than competition. Indigenous sports like Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Pittu and Tug of War are highly anticipated events. With the highlight being Ultimate Frisbee, an intriguing mixture of Touch Rugby and Basketball, already popular in college circles all over India. The Spree Sports Quiz, organized by the Quiz club is also eagerly awaited by Quizzers.

Themed ‘Play to Inspire’, Spree 2013 also believes in spreading a strong social message through sport. Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions to more than 4 million athletes in 170 countries. Special Olympics competitions are held every day, all around the world—Few of the teams are going to participate in SPREE 2013 .A friendly match and five day football workshop will be hosted from 27th Feb to 3rd march. 350 special athletes and 50 coaches will be coming from all corners of India. The ‘Act to Inspire’ campaign has been launched keeping this in mind. The ‘Act to Inspire’ campaign encompasses the charity driven ‘Spree GOA half Marathon’, A blood donation camp, A tree plantation drive and a beach cleanup drive.

After all the blood and gore of the morning, everyone needs to sit back and relax at the end of the day because they may have survived the battle, but the war is far from over. Aagman the band is performing during the opening night, and I promise you they will keep you all hooked to their seats with their scintillating performance. The aura that surrounds the daaru desi singer, Shalmali Kholgade is sure to get you drunk with her mesmerizing voice. The torch lit by Shalmali and Aagman will be raised even higher by Benny Dayal, the famous playback singer. The end should never fizzle out in the face of the beginning, and a DJ Night will bring an end to these performances, putting everyone in the mood for the award ceremony the next day.

All in all, the participants are in for an all action high octane ride.
